   PORT ELLEN Gordon & MacPhail 1974 - 1991 40.0%

COLORE : oro pallido
Note di crem-caramel. Diventa poi marino : ostriche, conchiglie.Quindi molto fruttato, con marmellata d’arancio, papaia in scatola e avocado.
BOCCA : torba, fumo, cioccolato, frutto della passione, miele, castagna. Poi marzapane, catrame, tè affumicato, arance candite.
FINALE : molto lungo e piacevole, note di cera, sale. Un po’ ruvido e secco.
COLOUR : pale gold.
NOSE : a rather elegant and refined start, with a beautiful waxiness and quite some rubbed orange skin and lamp oil.
Notes of caramel crème. Gets then quite maritime, on oysters (fat Loch Gruinart oysters, says Olivier), seashells, kelp…
And then superbly fruity, with orange marmalade, boxed papayas, even avocados…
Yes, just superb, even if not exactly oomphy. Full class.
PALATE : an excellent attack that shows that 40% can be alright as long as the malt has got something in the pants.
Indeed, this one fires on all cylinders: peat, smoke, chocolate, fruits (passion?), honey (chestnut)…
And then the expected marzipan, something tarry, smoked tea, candied oranges…
FINISH : lots of pleasure indeed and a rather long, waxy finish with something salty and slightly rough and drying.
Not too far from perfection.

  PORT ELLEN Mc.Gibbon’s Provenance Sherry cask 22 Y.O. 46 %

COLORE : giallo medio
COLOUR : medium yellow
NOSE : carryng a marriage of the sea and fruitiness, enjoy its saline and marine quality alongside the nuances of its sherry cask heritage.
PALATE : initially dry fore-taste runs to pepperiness, softened by the characteristics of the cask
FINISH : long, warming, smoky, plus the archetypal old leather from Port Ellen which runs on and on, tinged late by sea-weed and iodine.

  PORT ELLEN Douglas Laing 1982 – 2004 21 YO 50 %

COLORE : ambra-rosso scuro
NASO : molto sherry e aroma di torba. Bilanciamento perfetto.
FINALE : estremamente lungo, caramellato …
COLOUR : dark amber
NOSE : wow, here’s a strong challenger! A little bolder, with again lots of sherry and peaty aromas.
And again, the balance is perfect. Lots of special aromas like soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, parsley, marc, high gamy pheasant meat.
Lots of white pepper, strawberry jam, rubber…Wow! It’s much less sweet than the Wilson & Morgan. Hard to say which one I like best!
PALATE : incredibly bold and rich, starting with tons of pepper, loads of smoke, bunches of cooked fruits and again
these strange, but very interesting meaty notes. Very tart – but in a nice way. A genuine monster of a whisky, exactly
the one you should never serve to a newbie (more for us, right?) It gets smokier and smokier, with some added
extra-strong liquorice, tobacco quid, herbal liqueur (Jägermeister). Stunningly rich and bold.
FINISH : The finish is extremely long – perhaps too long if you have to meet somebody within the coming hour. Fudge, that’s malt!

  PORT ELLEN Wilson & Morgan Butt 6769 1979 – 2003 23 YO 46 %

COLORE : ambra scuro
Fumo, gomma bruciata. Legno bruciato, briciole di pane, cenere. Continua ad evolvere ma resta compatto. Più marino alla fine.
BOCCA : grande e deciso attacco di torba, pepe e sherry. Molto cacao, frutta secca, fumo... e spezie varie, perfino chili.
E’ veramente strong e molto secco, sempre più pepato e tannico.
COLOUR : deep amber
NOSE : lots of sherry at first nosing, but the peat is soon to arrive. Wow, what a superb balance!
Cooked strawberries with pepper, strawberry jam, blackcurrant liqueur, gluehwein, caramel. Smoke, burnt tyre.
What’s fantastic here is the fact that all aromas are perfectly melted,Burning wood, breadcrumb, ashes…
An endless development, yet a ‘compact’ whisky. Gets more maritime after a moment.
PALATE : bang! Strong and nervous attack, on peat, pepper and sherry. Lots of cocoa, dried fruits, smoke…
And a huge array of various spices. Even chilli! It’s really strong, and very dry. A malt for big boys…
Gets more and more peppery and tannic
FINISH : extremely long and peppery. Only a little too dry
