- 3 - Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix 2010 47,6%

   

Colour: pale gold.
Nose: seriously, it's not extremely different from standard at first nosing, which really surprises me.
Sure it's a little rounder and less sooty but other than that, it's also a rather big and nervous malt whisky.
The development is rather different, though, with more oranges and ripe apples, but the
grassiness is rather similar. They really diverge after ten minutes, this one becoming lighter (but it's no light
whisky), fruitier and, in essence, 'younger'
Mouth: this is punchy! The oak's relatively big while the spirit is relatively light, but the combination works in my opinion.
Quite malty and very 'malt whisky' (I know that sounds silly but I think it's a profile that's 'right in the middle' - oh well...), with also notes that
are often to be found in the aged versions of Glenfiddich, between beeswax, honey,nutmeg,
wood polish... Also cartloads of apples (ripe, overripe, cooked, dried...)
Finish: medium long, rather soft and rather fruitier. More apples and touches of pears I often find pears in Glenfiddich.
Comments: very good, I believe it shows to a fairly 'general' public that there's something else behind the 'easier' core range.
Something that the 15yo CS already did in the past.

- 4 - Glenfiddich Age Of Discovery Madeira 2011 40%

 

 

 

 

Colour: gold.
Nose: hey, but this is nice! Aromatic but not extravagantly so, rather rich, slightly vinous but with good balance,
rather less dry than other Madeira-ed whiskies that I could try until today and a little more towards sherry (PX or cream).
Sultanas, a little strawberry jam, marmalade, figs, then a little more tea (earl grey) and just touches of humus/mushrooms...
All that on a bed of vanilla that I'd rather have expected from bourbon wood. Or was it first fill American oak Madeira wood?
Anyway, a nice, rather rich nose, very nicely composed and a bit 'un-Glenfiddich' because of the richness. Ha, variety!
Mouth: well, the attack is quite superb but there's almost no middle. Maybe we're not used to 40% vol. anymore?
It had started on beautiful notes of candied oranges, mulled wine and touches of cloves and cinnamon, but it really nosedived after fifteen seconds, leaving only a thin sweetish gingery coating and a little fudge. A one-song gig (but the song's great).
Finish: obviously short, with only a few sweet and spicy touches (crystallised ginger).
Comments: we need a version at 45 or 46% of this. The base is simply superb in my opinion, but the spirit's a little too light to support the treatment.

- 5 - Glenfiddich 30 YO 2010 43%

 

 

 

 

Nose: Cocoa, espresso coffee, oak, malt, hints of very rich sherry. A perfect Glenfiddich, with predominance of sublime oak.
Palate: Very rich with a mix of dates, peels and nuts from the sherry barrel, and then a surge of vanilla sweetness and oak.
Hints of blossom, mixed fruits.
Finish: Long and malty, toffee and honeyed sweetness.

La distilleria Glenfiddich ( valle dei cervi ) situata a Dufftown, nel centro dello Speyside e' sicuramente diventata una delle principali attrazioni della Scozia. E' stata la prima nel 1969 ad aprire un visitor centre organizzato, e a tutt'oggi accoglie un numero enorme di turisti ( circa centomila all'anno ) Con i suoi 28 alambicchi rappresenta una delle tre più'grandi realta' produttive del settore: una ogni cinque bottiglie di single malt prodotte in scozia arriva da qui. E'una delle pochissime distillerie ad avere una linea di imbottigliamento in loco. Potete solo immaginare la vastità' dei magazzini di stoccaggio Questo classico single malt e' da circa trentanni il più' venduto al mondo( versione 12YO ): la sua bottiglia triangolare ha fatto la storia diffondendo il malt whisky in ogni antro della terra...( solo Ardbeg, per il momento e' stato nello spazio ... ma vedremo alla fine della serata ). Il suo 'core range' e' costituito da 12, 15, 18, 21, 30 YO. Ogni anno poi, alcune edizioni limitate, come quelle in degustazione questa sera, vanno a completare la vasta offerta di mercato. Sapra' questo malto, anche essere degno ingrediente degli esclusivi cocktails studiati per noi da Adriano ?
